When and how to eat in Catalunya

In the area you can eat very well for very nice prices.  Typical Catalan and Spanish is:

  • Breakfast in the morning is called ‘ Esmorzar ‘ in Catalan or ‘ Desayuno ‘ in Spanish : one takes a cup of coffee and a couple of cookies or madeleine cake or a sweetie like a chocolate croissant.
  • A “carajillo” you will see the “worker” at  six or seven o’clock in the morning: coffee with cognac! The bar Frankfurt is during the week and on Saturday early in the morning full with farmers and hunters
  • Workers, farmers and hunters eat a lot of food: they take a glass of wine or beer for breakfast, for example, roasted garlic bread with olive oil (torrades amb tomaquet) for example biscuits, a tortilla or a bone marrow
  • Between noon (that is, between 13.00 and 16.00), the largest and most important meal is eaten, ‘dinar ‘ in Catalan or ‘ comida ‘ in Spanish, It is also the warmest time of the day, the sun is being evolved and it is eaten inside. Outside eating does not happen at that time; That’s just the “foreigners”! Only cenar (evening meal) can be enjoyed on the outdoor terrace.
  • The evening meal is called ‘ sopar ‘ in Catalan and ‘ Cena ‘ in Spanish. This one is often lighter than lunch (unless you eat out of course), with as main dish meat or fish, and some vegetables or a salad with it. Usually the evening meal is served between 20:30 and 23:00. Restaurants generally only open after 20.00
  • At six o’clock, the “meredienda” is eaten: a snack in between, this is also the time for tapas. The Catalan also take a glass of vermouth at this time.

The area around Can Negrell is packed with restaurants, from very good and cheap to the best of the world. What’s good is a Menu del Dia, for a price between € 10.50 and € 25.00 a 3 course menu with wine,  water and bread. The menu was mandatory in 1965 in Franco time for all restaurants to make Spain a more attractive country for tourists. The original price was 50 pesetas for a menu.

There are a number of restaurants that we warmly recommend for their cosines and atmosphere:

Vidreres restaurants

In Vidreres itself there are a few restaurants in the village center.

Can Pou, https://goo.gl/maps/LXSy438V5F52 menu del Dia € 13,50. In the summer Can Pou has a nice terrace outside for the evening meal. Recommended!

Can Magi https://goo.gl/maps/XSfyanqT3sq menu del Dia € 10,50.  Good food and for a good price.

Hostal de La Granota https://goo.gl/maps/WPVVwpbJooF2  is located on the NII on the way to the airport. In summer you can sit there under a large medieval vault, the vault is open on both sides. Early this was a very large stable where the passengers between Barcelona and France could change horses.

Between the NII and Vidreres you have hidden Restaurante Can Castells, https://goo.gl/maps/b5K83x86F9n Can Castells has several menus at different prices and is famous for Pan Catalan, which is Spanish round farmers bread. This bread is roasted on a fork, with bread you get a garlic clove and a juicy full tomato. It is the intention that you first rub the garlic into the bread and then smear the tomato over it, it is a simple recipe and the result is fantastic. You can also get the most spicy Ailio at Can Castells.

MOZZAFIATO cucina italiana  is a new Italian restaurant it’s has really positive reviews and the tasting menu is very recommended. It’s on Carrer Pompeu Fabra, 20, which is the 1ste road on your right on the big roundabout in the center of Vidreres coming from the Carrer Lloret.
